Replying to positive reviews is the most underrated growth lever in local marketing. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 88% of consumers are more likely to use a business that responds to all of its reviews — not just the bad ones. Google's own Business Profile docs explicitly call replying a ranking and engagement signal.
This guide gives you the 4-part formula behind every great reply, then 50+ copy-paste templates grouped by industry and scenario — including 3-star "neutral" responses, which most businesses get wrong.
Why responding to positive reviews matters
- It's a public conversation, not a private thank-you. Every reply is read by the next 100 customers deciding whether to choose you.
- It boosts local SEO. Reply rate is one of the signals Google uses to gauge business engagement on your Business Profile.
- It improves AI search visibility. A January 2026 Search Atlas study of 104,855 LLM citations found reply rate correlates with how often ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode recommend a business.
- It encourages more reviews. Customers see you actually read them — and ask rate goes up.
The 4-part formula for every positive reply
The THANK framework
- Thank — open with a personal thank-you, by name when possible
- Highlight — reference one specific detail from their review
- Add — slip in one keyword or service for SEO (naturally)
- Next — invite them back, or to tell a friend
Keep replies under 60 words. Long replies read as marketing copy; short ones read as a real human.

Don't ignore them. A 4-star reviewer is a fan you can convert to a 5 next time — but only if you acknowledge the gap.
39. Thanks for the honest review, {name} — and the fair feedback on {specific point}. We've already looked into it. Hope you'll give us another shot to earn the fifth star.
40. {Name}, appreciate the kind words and the honesty. You're right that {specific issue} — we're working on it. Next round's on us if you're up for trying again.

3-star reviews (neutral / mixed)
These are the hardest. The customer isn't angry, but they're not a fan. Acknowledge the mixed feeling honestly — never defensive.
42. Thanks for the honest review, {name}. I hear you on {specific issue} — that's not the experience we want. I'd love to make it right. Could you email me at {contact}? — {your name}, Owner

Short, no-text 5-star ratings
Even a star-only review deserves a reply. It signals to Google and future readers that you're paying attention.
49. Thanks for the 5 stars! Appreciate you taking the time.
50. 🙏 Thank you! See you next time.
51. Thank you so much for the 5-star rating — means a lot to our small team.
What NOT to do in a positive review reply
- Don't copy-paste the same reply 20 times. Google's spam systems and human readers both spot it.
- Don't stuff keywords. One service or neighborhood mention is fine; three is obvious.
- Don't add a promo code or upsell. It cheapens the reply and makes the thank-you feel transactional.
- Don't reply within 60 seconds. A too-fast reply reads as automated. Wait an hour or two; reply within 24 hours.
- Don't use "valued customer" or "Dear sir/madam." Real humans don't talk like that.
How fast should you reply to positive reviews?
Sprout Social's 2025 Index found 76% of consumers expect a response within 24 hours on social channels — and reviews follow the same expectation. Aim for the same business day, but never within the first hour. The sweet spot is 2–24 hours.
